Plummeting Into The Sky
Title: Plummeting Into The Sky
Author: Ashley
Pairing/Character: Woody Goodman
Word Count: 623
Rating: G
Summary: Woody Goodman misses Neptune's innocence.
Spoilers/Warnings: Spoilers up to 2x02

Things in Neptune aren't the way they're supposed to be - as long as Woody Goodman can remember, there have been two sides to Neptune but there's never been a bad side. There's always been phenomenal and less-phenomenal, but now it's all been downgraded to dangerous.

And that's why he's running for Mayor.

He grew up in Neptune, California. He remembers the wholesome family atmosphere that Neptune used to project, the way that nobody needed the alarm systems or fancy guards. That was before Kane software, of course, and before the town had become a haven for rich people. Mostly, it was before Aaron Echolls.

Ever since Lilly Kane's murder (which was completely tragic), things have been getting worse and worse and worse and he hates that his daughter has to live in a world like this one. He hates it even more when that bus plunges off of that cliff and into the ocean, and it turns his stomach to think that Gia might have been on that bus. Gia might have been dead as senselessly as all of those other kids are dead, which is even more tragic than the Lilly Kane thing.

Because part of him, no matter how sadistic and sick it makes him feel inside, thinks that maybe Lilly Kane deserved what she got. And maybe cleaning up Neptune, making it a safer place for the people who aren't engaging in sexual intercourse with their boyfriend's abusive father, will be a little bit easier without bad seeds like Lilly Kane running around perpetuating the problem.

He doesn't think about Lilly Kane very often; it makes him feel guilty, somehow, and he knows there's no reason for him to feel guilty about something so far out of his control. Especially since he and Jake Kane are golf buddies - or they were, before he and the wife let their other kid off his leash and took off out of Neptune. Woody really doesn’t understand why they aren’t holding Duncan close, cherishing every minute they have with him because anything could happen. Anything has happened – they’ve almost lost Duncan, too.

Still. As long as they’re still contributing to his campaign, he’s not going to criticize their parenting. It would really just be in poor taste, and anyway, he really just wants to make things better.

He wants a town that'll be on the news because of its championship baseball team, not because of unnecessary deaths and troublemaking bikers. He wants a town that makes sense, one where the murder rate goes down as incomes go up - a normal town full of normal people who are just trying to get by. Regardless of everything that's happened, he has a twisted sense of pride when it comes to this town and he wants to be the one who fixes things.

He’s already completed step one by getting Keith Mars to run for Sheriff again. People are willing to eat their words, now, some of them following his example in doing so. Sure, there was that little mishap at the debate, but his guys are good – better than Lamb’s anyway – and Keith’s numbers haven’t suffered too much.

Everything, he knows, is going to be all right. He’s got faith in Keith and faith in Neptune, misplaced though it may be. How many tragedies can possibly take place in one small town?

And while just thinking that may have jinxed him, it’s nearly November and he’s ready for things to change. So he will hold Gia close, he will take Neptune into 2006 and things will be better, and he won’t feel guilty for wanting it all because he’s Woody Goodman.

He makes things happen.

And that is why he’s running for Mayor.
